Homeschool Applicant Banned: ACLJ Defends Firefighter Against City

Andrew Coates, 22, was denied the opportunity to pursue a career as a professional firefighter solely because he was homeschooled, despite his family's compliance with Nebraska’s homeschool laws. Andrew is an exemplary candidate. He is currently a volunteer firefighter and was named “Rookie Firefighter of the Year” at the station where he volunteers. He is also a state-certified EMT who studied firefighting at a community college and has demonstrated his ability to serve his community.

After Andrew applied to become a full-time firefighter, the City of Fremont, Nebraska adopted a requirement that disqualifies him based on his homeschool diploma. The ACLJ is representing Andrew and demanding that the city repeal this discriminatory requirement and allow him to apply.
