Obama-Era Ilhan Investigation Haunts the Left

The investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-5) is now haunting the Left amid the 2026 midterm elections after The New York Times broke the story that the Obama Administration had also investigated whether Omar married her brother. Now dozens of far-Left members of the House Representatives have begun distancing themselves from the Congresswoman.
As The New York Times reported:
The federal investigation of Representative Ilhan Omar is focused in part on whether she entered into a sham marriage in 2009 to help a man suspected of being her brother obtain a green card, according to current and former officials familiar with the matter.
The F.B.I. and Department of Homeland Security investigated the marriage in summer 2016, during the Obama administration, and found some evidence that it was fraudulent, current and former officials said.
So it turns out the investigation of Rep. Ilhan Omar – which she and her supporters claim is nothing but political targeting by the Trump Administration – is not a new investigation, nor did it even begin with President Trump at all.
We know there has been an ongoing conversation for years over this whole conspiracy theory that Omar fraudulently tried to get a family member into the United States by marriage. Now we’ve learned that the original investigation started a decade ago under the Obama Administration.
And The New York Times is saying the Obama Administration found evidence that the marriage was fraudulent, according to current and former officials; however, prosecutors decided not to charge a crime because this alleged felony fell outside of a five-year statute of limitations.
Since we have learned that those questions go back to the Obama DOJ, going back over a decade, it would seem to poke all kinds of holes in Omar’s argument.
And curiously, President Obama himself has recently been saying that this is the Trump DOJ going after a political enemy, calling it “appalling.” However, his own Department of Justice found evidence of a crime and declined to prosecute: That is what’s actually appalling.
Other Democrats are also now starting to find the report troubling, and they’re suddenly backing away from Omar. According to Fox News, nearly 40 Democrats disregarded an effort started by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-7) to force President Trump to drop the investigation against Omar.
Today’s Sekulow broadcast included more discussion of this latest news regarding Rep. Ilhan Omar’s potential immigration fraud. We were also joined by Congressman Brad Knott (NC-13) to discuss next week’s critical midterm elections.
