Democrats thought they had the upper hand in the redistricting fight – pouring millions into Virginia and with Gavin Newsom leading the charge in California.

But now the landscape has perhaps shifted. Legal setbacks, such as the recent Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana, are mounting, making the battle for control of Congress far more unpredictable.

It started with Texas and California drawing up new maps. Then the Supreme Court got involved, allowing both to move forward with the changes.

Now Republican lawmakers in Tennessee have just submitted a brand-new redistricting map.

As reported:

Tennessee Republicans have released their proposed new congressional map amid a highly contested special session to redraw districts in the Volunteer State.Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton and Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson filed bills this week to redraw the state’s districts, saying the changes will “ensure the state’s representation in Washington reflects its conservative values.

The proposed map, according to Republicans, modernizes the state’s redistricting process by removing “racial data from the mapmaking process entirely.”

Since the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling reined in the use of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, we're now seeing new congressional districts being proposed in southern states like Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Remember, the Supreme Court essentially ruled that it doesn't matter if it's partisan. It doesn't matter where the politics land. Individual states can make that decision and then let the voters decide.

Florida will now likely be adding 4 new conservative leaning seats. Additional prospective moves include Louisiana adding one to two seats. Alabama and Mississippi each adding one seat. And Tennessee’s proposed congressional map also proposes adding a lean-conservative district.

Today’s Sekulow broadcast included more analysis of changes coming to congressional districts and how that could affect the upcoming midterms. We were also joined by ACLJ Senior Counsel for Global Affairs – and former Secretary of State – Mike Pompeo to discuss the latest in negotiations with Iran.
