Taliban Seeks Iran Connection

In alarming news out of Afghanistan, the Taliban is seeking a relationship with Iran. The presumed goal of the Taliban in Afghanistan is to establish an Islamic base with Iran, which is their border neighbor. Specifically, the Taliban is courting support from the Shiite Hazaras, a group that the Taliban previously massacred.

My dad, ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow, points out the very real danger that a radical Islamic alliance has on Christians in the region:

Iran could become a natural and dangerous ally to Afghanistan. They are trying to establish an Islamic base . . . that is what Joe Biden has allowed to be established there. I am extremely concerned about the Christian community in the region. We are going to be prepared to go to the U.N. and use our international capabilities fully to protect Christians. We cannot give up, for the U.S. citizens who are there nor for Afghan Christians, as they face potential persecution.

Just weeks after the Taliban took over Afghanistan, they are now announcing the creation of their new government and its leaders. Additionally, they are demanding international recognition, even demanding that U.S. diplomats return to Kabul, all while American citizens remain stranded in the country.

ACLJ Senior Counsel for Global Affairs and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discusses the problems with the reaction from U.S. leadership:

I’ve listened to the Biden Administration over the last days, and they continually say that the U.S. has leverage over the Taliban. What they are talking about essentially is money – your money. They are essentially going to pay the Taliban to provide the services that we want provided. This is a terrible idea; it’s just like paying for hostages; it only breeds more contempt, more misery. . . . Our leverage for diplomacy occurred when we had soldiers on the ground. Our capacity to negotiate with the Taliban now is intensely limited, because we don’t have the tools; we don’t have the American power present.

In other international news, Sec. Pompeo has laid out a plan for holding the Chinese Communist Party accountable for their dangerous cover-up of the origin of COVID-19, utilizing the court system:

The Chinese Communist Party has imposed enormous costs, not just property costs but loss of life, in the United States. As a result, there should be a remedy for that. Today under U.S. law it’s very difficult to sue a nation, but Congress could easily pass an amendment to that to permit suits to go challenge the Chinese Communist Party for what they did to businesses, communities, and to individuals’ lives. This should have bipartisan support.

ACLJ Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy Ric Grenell also joined the broadcast to break news from his sources in Germany that there is a Biden Administration directive to process refugees into America as quickly as possible, without the individuals operating through the proper channels. This is incredibly dangerous, as we need the vetting process to close the door to potential terrorists entering America.

Many of the refugees are unable to provide normal materials required for vetting, and what the Biden team is telling officials is that they should process these individuals as quickly as possible. One individual told me that they are being pressured to use their own “hunches” in order to provide access to refugees to the United States. . . . We are the most generous nation in the world when it comes to giving people U.S. citizenship. We’re very proud of that. But unfortunately there are 100 million people trying to come into our country, and we have to have strict vetting, we have to have rules in place, and we should not cut corners. . . . But what we’re seeing is politicians attacking the established process to vet people coming into the United States.
